Sarah Orne Jewett (September 3, 1849-June 24, 1909) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. She is best known for her local color works set in or near her hometown of South Berwick, Maine. Although her most successful pieces were her short stories and novels, Jewett wrote a superfluous amount of poetry throughout her lifetime and it remained her true passion (Blanchard; Lauter; Nagel).
